Winter head races 2006

Hopes are high after a successful Summer season....

Yare cup, Norwich

four crews travelled up to Norwich to compete at the Yare cup.  Chris Jillings took part in the first division, finishing the 3700m course in 15 minutes exactly.  The lazier crews chose to compete in the second division, mainly because it gave them an extra hour in bed.....Mills and Harris were the first Deben rowers to set off, having a good row, and finishing in 14mins 59 secs, eventually coming second in the N2x class by 7 seconds...we were less than impressed!! Jarret and Notcutt also raced in the same division, finishing the course in 15mins14secs.  The final Deben crew to race was Davey/Churcher, who finished in 16 mins 32secs, Winning their class, sadly no pot as they were the only people in the class!

So all in all, not one fo Debens most successful outings, but definately very promising for the future.

Woodbridge Fun Day

Will Nottcutt and Nicola Cooper offered to organise a club fun day/bbq/head race. With the mention of food, we all jumped at the oppurtunity! Approximately 10 crews lined up on the start line of the shortened course- due to adverse weather conditions i.e.the water was a little bit on the bumpy side.  The fleet consisted of 5 double sculls, being crewed by a huge range of experiences- (thankyou to all those 'veterans' who took novices out, and gave them their first taste of racing!),two tub doubles, and three singles.  The final boat out on the water was the club's new coxless pair- being rowed by none other than teamwillsquared, who after a beasting of an outing the day before at the yare cup, were looking to 'take things easy' so were giving the sweep oar lark a bit of a try out!  The overall winners were Jarrett and Anderson, completeing the course in roughly 13 minutes in a double, although the postions do not really matter, it was the experince and friendly atmosphere that counted.  Thanks msut also go to Secretary Anna Hedington and Chairman John Churcher, for managing the Timing side of things.  Thankyou also to Club Capatain, Simon Newton (not rowing due to a DIY injury) Who manned the safety launch and acted as marshall!  Overall thanks though must go to Nicola and Will, firstly for having the brains to organise the event, secondly for having the patience to get everything sorted, and thridly, for a pretty awesome bbq!

Sadly the fun day also saw the departure of one of the Clubs More active 'youths'; Will Mills, who has gone to University In Southampton, where he hopes to continue his rowing/sculling career, hopefully rowing for the universities senior team as a fresher- which will be no mean feet, but definately achievable!

Although Will promises us he will be back next summer to race for the club again, his general presence around the club over the winter will definately be missed!

Readers may be distraught (or possibly not) to hear that this has caused Teamwillsquared to be disbanded, atleast until the summer, When Mills has returned from Uni, and Harris sorts his life out, and gets back from his travels! Up until then, Harris is doing his best to fill the void, racing with other experienced members of the club, and certainly widening his Sculling horizons!

Sorry if this sounds like an obituary...I can assure you Wills not dead, hes just gone away for a bit....
